This is your City. It’s amazing.

Last week there was an article in the Travel section of the Wall Street Journal titled, "Take Monday Off: Houston" by Matthew Kronsberg. Yes, the article is telling the high-income-earning demographic across the country that they should consider hanging out in Houston over a long weekend for a fun, short trip. Houston. I know!

Travel article about Houston in the Wall Street Journal

The article describes Houston as an exciting tourist destination. While it doesn’t make explicit efforts to point out family-friendly or kid-friendly things to do in town (of which there are many), it nonetheless makes Houston sound like the kind of place that I would like to visit. I was pleasantly surprised to see how good it made our City seem, and how much I often take for granted about living here and doing all these things with easy access to anywhere inside the Loop.

It brings up a few points that, as Northsiders, we should be aware of:

  • This is your city. It’s amazing. Take advantage of it.
  • People want to be here, to visit and to live – especially inside the Loop.
  • This is how attractive and desirable the Near Northside already is. We live within the vicinity of all these great things (made even easier once the Light Rail extensions are completed).
  • This is how valuable your property is, or will become very, very soon.

Hey, thanks for sharing this article, you make good points about what makes Houston great!

I am originally from Conroe, but I currently live in the Near North Side of Chicago. My wife and I are planning to move to Houston in July and I have been checking out places in Houston’s Near North Side. I’m wondering what your opinion of the area is, and what I should expect if we bought a home there? I’m interested in the Avenue CDC development because our finances line up with what they offer. Do you have an opinion of this new development?

I really enjoy reading your posts, keep up the good work!

Hi, thanks for the comments. To answer your question, the Near Northside is a great place to live; but don’t think it’s easy. We are just North of Downtown, so we have all the problems of an urban area. However, we also have all the convenience of an urban area. We are mostly working-class or poor, but recently people with different incomes have been moving in. The community is pretty close, almost everyone knows one another somehow. The neighborhood has a lot of history. Not just in the old houses and narrow streets, but a history of marginalization and tension with the City and with HPD, a history of neglect and disinvestment, and a history of skepticism because of it all. I sometimes think of the Near Northside as Harlem waiting for our own renaissance. We’re either too scared, too busy, or too stubborn to make it happen.
