Morning in the ‘Hood

It’s been a good weekend and a restful morning. I do like to hear the sounds of the morning in my neighborhood. It’s a busy place. Early on, you’ll hear the train whistles as they come through probably around Brooks and Main then continue to Houston Ave. Then you can hear everyone getting out of their houses and getting in their cars either to go to work or take the kids to school. I sometimes hear the occasional Fiesta cart rolling down the street, but usually only on trash days when people are digging through all the trash cans on the block to looks for cans to recycle.

Then as the morning goes on, I hear fewer cars go by and more birds singing. The birds have been signing the whole time, but they just blend in with the other noise. Further in the distance I can hear the cars going up and down the freeway. Except that they don’t sound like cars. There are no honking horns and when there aren’t very many large trucks the sound is a constant rushing noise and if I didn’t know better I would think there was a river nearby. There is in fact a bayou nearby, but it’s more or less silent.

Of course this all depends on whether the traffic helicopters are gone already and the trash collection trucks and buses aren’t plowing through the neighborhood. Quiet mornings like this make me feel like I have everything I need right here.
