Day Off

Monday, February 19th, 2007

I’m so happy to have a day off today! I’ve just been washing some dishes and hanging out with Eli all day. I’ve also been eating girl scout cookies and potato chips with salt and vinegar stuff on them. Trez relaxing. I’ve also been online and looking at crazy things like woden memory sticks; sweet!

Now everyone can say “told you so”

Metro’s North line proposal raises outcry By RAD SALLEE appeared in the Chronicle on Feb 9, talking about Northside business owners upset that Metro will need to buy their land after all. This includes the original Doneraki restaurant on Fulton which has been thriving at that location since before I was born.

Taking land up and down North Main and up Fulton really will deprive the neighborhood of some landmark business and restaurants. The only hope we have is that places like Doneraki will be able to get some top dollar from Metro to compensate for the loss. As much as I wanted the light rail to come up into the hood, I’m seeing that metro really knows nothing about the area or this community and nor does it care. What could have been an efficient mobility solution to connect the Northside to Downtown has turned into this spacey-looking bus blunder that’s going to scar the neighborhood the way every other development has in the last 70 years.

White’s and Garcia’s New Deal

Monday, February 5th, 2007

an old Post that I never got around to posting, but interesting nonetheless:

This is interesting, Mayor and a councilman sign a deal to bring affordable new houses to area (you will need to log into the chronicle archives to view), as it appeared in the Chronicle on October 16, 2006. It seems that Mayor White and Councilman Garcia have signed a “…three-part plan to bring affordable housing to a long-neglected neighborhood.” The plan gets $2 million to build 60 signle family homes that are meant to be affordable for families with incomes of $25,000 and $30,000. The article says that Garcia and White claim this plan will preserve the character of the neighborhood and hault some of the displacement that’s happening with the current townhouse and condo developments in the Near Northside.

Pause

Okay, so Maybe things do stop around here. no more marathons or broken water mains erupting in the street (the city still hasn’t patched over that completely). I heard that there was apparently some big protest about Northsiders against the Metro BRT because there wasn’t enough stops/stations planned for the line. Then I didn’t hear anything more about it. I’d like to know if anyone has some news or info about it.
